Experience the Real Rome through These offbeat Places

Rome is filled to the brim with extraordinary treasures, and also with tourists in high season. Getting an authentic glimpse of the real Rome shrouded in thick crowds and touristy places becomes difficult, but not impossible. Besides the majestic monuments, there are also many alternative places that are non-touristic and rich in local vibes.

Centri sociali

At a glance, the Eternal City is full of traditions, classical beauty and time-honoured art. While these lend Rome its unique character, there is also a flourishing alternative culture scene in the city. Rome’s alternative culture is celebrated in social centres, known as ‘’centri sociali’’, found in most neighbourhoods; these centres are usually semi-legal or illegal in nature and are placed in abandoned buildings repurposed as a hub of diverse activities that can be enjoyed free of charge. Concerts, dance events, theatre, language courses, etc., these places allow visitors to feel the true pulse of the city.

MAAM Museum

A shelter for many homeless families of different nationalities, this abandoned factory has been transformed into an interesting museum adorned with alternative artworks. It was spearheaded by anthropologist Giorgio De Finis and developed with the help of the museum’s residents who also maintain it presently. This ambitious art project has turned the negligence of this place into its biggest strength. Previously this place repelled visitors, but presently this museum is a popular alternative to the renowned and traditional museums of the Eternal City.

Please remember that this museum is a residential place and is usually open to visitors on weekends only.
